Sys Admin Day

On July 25 I will silently celebrate my appreciation day.

Yes I’ve had to tell coworkers which was the “correct” mouse button, even had someone try and use the spacebar once. Also.. you don’t need to double click links while browsing the internet.

Wall Tattoo

I never really moved into my apartment, it’s always been a “temporary” arrangement. (Going on temporary 2 years now.) Recently I’ve thinking about decorating and found this:

Maybe I’ll finally replace my awesome Warcraft 3 poster hah!

Lake Wentworth excursion

Temperatures in the low 80s and my first real dose of sun in about 9 months, complete with awesome sunburn.

Caught a lot of fish, 99% rainbows and 1 crappie. Saw a few 5-9lb fish being pulled out of the lake but we didn’t get anything near that. Had one on probably about 3lbs and 80% of the way to the boat before it tossed the hook. Also got a good view of some lakefront property available on the lake :P

So apparently this isn’t a joke, this listing is actually on her website. The awesome shack just happens to sit on 16 acres bordering the lake.

drupal secure pages ssl

A while back I put up a hack to require SSL on some Drupal pages by adding a block that checked for SSL and if it wasn’t present redirected the person to https. That was a bad solution and could of been done better with htaccess.

This solution on the other hand is great. http://drupal.org/project/securepages

If you need to secure a single page it seems like you have to use the “node/xxx” format in “Pages that will be secure.” I tried using the URL path alias but it didn’t work regardless of / or *

Together these modules are going to make life easy as I push to have all my coworkers start creating thier own forms for online signup to our programs. If you haven’t tried it, Webform: http://drupal.org/project/webform is super easy to use and pretty flexible.

Text Processing with Python

I do a lot of easy text parsing at work, typically stripping out relevant information to a CSV. What I do is far simpler than whats covered in the link below but it’s been very useful the last hour or so. :D

No fish

The weekend was cold with freak weather. Rain/Hail/Snow all in the course of an hour. Checked out the Sol Duc for springers quickly on Saturday but packed it in and waited for weather to get better. Hit Thunder Lake later that day for a stab at some trout with my Dad but I was 0 for 0, he landed and released 2.

snow

I can deal with it being cold but the wind later in the afternoon really killed the day.

Rent

Carpenter Crest gave me a super friendly letter. In the letter they thank me for being a “valued customer” by telling me their costs have gone up and my rent will increase. Rent is going up $80 a month unless I sign a lease, in which case it will only go up $60. woohoo .. not really.

Google maps fails - need new photos

A few weeks ago I went out with my Dad to do some fishing in some of the hard to find lakes near Forks; Wentworth, Thunder, Big Joe’s, and Dickey Lake. As time passes the Rayonier maps get more inaccurate and finding these places gets more difficult. It would be very nice to have a hi-res satellite picture to find what you’re looking for the night before you head out. (Maybe I should just buy a GPS)

Google maps quality is horrible but Multimaps has some great images of the entire area. It looks like the Google maps images are pretty old too, there’s some clear cuts that are growing with reprod now but still appear totally covered in trees. Here’s some links comparing the same space around Thunder Lake (Gunderson Mountain area).

Google maps or Multimaps

Unfortunately Multimaps is slower, has a clunky interface and in all other ways inferior. Whoever is in charge of this stuff needs to give some lovin to the Olympic Peninsula. And thanks to Rayonier for keeping all this land accessible to the public. Hopefully it will stay this way since whenever the state gets their hands on something they close it up so no one can make use of it.

back in school

I’m taking a SQL Server 2005 class at SPSCC. So far it’s moved pretty slow and from the syllabus I won’t be learning much new stuff until 1/2 way through the course. It’s good review but I was hoping to pick up more info about administration and efficiency. Unfortunately the next class which focuses more on that sort of thing is listed in the catalog but has never been offered.

Also thinking about Grad school again. Too bad I wasn’t this focused when going to WWU, my grades would have been a whole lot better.
