Text Processing with Python

I do a lot of easy text parsing at work, typically stripping out relevant information to a CSV. What I do is far simpler than whats covered in the link below but it’s been very useful the last hour or so. :D

No fish

The weekend was cold with freak weather. Rain/Hail/Snow all in the course of an hour. Checked out the Sol Duc for springers quickly on Saturday but packed it in and waited for weather to get better. Hit Thunder Lake later that day for a stab at some trout with my Dad but I was 0 for 0, he landed and released 2.

snow

I can deal with it being cold but the wind later in the afternoon really killed the day.

Rent

Carpenter Crest gave me a super friendly letter. In the letter they thank me for being a “valued customer” by telling me their costs have gone up and my rent will increase. Rent is going up $80 a month unless I sign a lease, in which case it will only go up $60. woohoo .. not really.

Google maps fails – need new photos

A few weeks ago I went out with my Dad to do some fishing in some of the hard to find lakes near Forks; Wentworth, Thunder, Big Joe’s, and Dickey Lake. As time passes the Rayonier maps get more inaccurate and finding these places gets more difficult. It would be very nice to have a hi-res satellite picture to find what you’re looking for the night before you head out. (Maybe I should just buy a GPS)

Google maps quality is horrible but Multimaps has some great images of the entire area. It looks like the Google maps images are pretty old too, there’s some clear cuts that are growing with reprod now but still appear totally covered in trees. Here’s some links comparing the same space around Thunder Lake (Gunderson Mountain area).

Google maps or Multimaps

Unfortunately Multimaps is slower, has a clunky interface and in all other ways inferior. Whoever is in charge of this stuff needs to give some lovin to the Olympic Peninsula. And thanks to Rayonier for keeping all this land accessible to the public. Hopefully it will stay this way since whenever the state gets their hands on something they close it up so no one can make use of it.

back in school

I’m taking a SQL Server 2005 class at SPSCC. So far it’s moved pretty slow and from the syllabus I won’t be learning much new stuff until 1/2 way through the course. It’s good review but I was hoping to pick up more info about administration and efficiency. Unfortunately the next class which focuses more on that sort of thing is listed in the catalog but has never been offered.

Also thinking about Grad school again. Too bad I wasn’t this focused when going to WWU, my grades would have been a whole lot better.

April Fools

Sitzmar reminded me of this hilarious trick. I’d love to do this at work but I’m sure someone would freak out, and it’d be more pain than it’s worth.

mm music

Nothing better than a midnight programming session broken up with random music searches. Thanks Pandora, Last.FM, Winamp and screaming fast newsgroup access.

I dropped off my broken receiver at Desco Audio in Olympia. If it turns out to be hosed I’m going to buy a new 2 channel receiver and upgrade my speakers at the same time. I demod some Paradigms while I was dropping off my receiver and was really impressed, the mids were very clear but overall they were a little bright. Next time I’m going to bring some of my own music in to make a final decision.

massive equipment failure

My NAD T761 receiver randomly dies, this really sucks cause I got it for a super good deal on ebay. While trying to troubleshoot the problem I blow a tweeter in my speakers. Next my headset starts acting funny then the mic dies, I take it apart and find the problem but it’s not worth the time to hack it back together.  Finally my WD 500GB external drive starts throwing bad blocks again.

I hope this terrible luck doesn’t spill over to work.

Olympia-Lacey Web Design Meetup

http://webdesign.meetup.com/507/

About 14 people came to our first meeting which was hosted in the WFB building. Kelly put in a TON of work to get the whole thing ready, just 2 days ago the room was empty. (pic coming soon)

We attracted a wide range of people, 2 have their own web design companies, others inherited websites and just want to learn more about what they’re doing. I volunteered a presentation on Drupal at our next meeting so if you’re close to the Olympia/Lacey area and you’re interested in web stuff, programming/ui/ecommerce/design/whatever you should stop by.
